The Stanza Christmas Post

Well it’s almost been four weeks since the last post. Words have been flowing onto the page at the same rate molasses flows in December. I would say January, but it turns out that molasses can flow quite quickly in January, up to the tune of “35 miles per hour”—according to Wikipedia, at least. But that was 104 years ago, in the regrettable molasses flood of Boston. I digress.

Since it’s the end of the year, I wanted to tell you all about what we haven’t done on Stanza yet. We don’t have a thousand songs. We don’t have an app for Android. We don’t have paying subscribers. We don’t have sixteen thousand lines of code. We haven’t spent a total of 800 hours on Stanza between the Stanza blokes yet. Our various and sundry programmers still have not worked 500 hours on our projects. Confused? Here are the real numbers.

Approximately 15,000 lines of code have been written—I could digress a whole bunch about what counts as a line of code. Does an empty line count as a line of code? Does a single code statement split over multiple lines of code count as one line or multiple? Does a tree fall in the forest? Does it make a sound? Does anybody care about the number of lines of code?

The Stanza guys have worked approximately 792 hours—all unpaid. Oh the horror. Then there’s the Upwork people who have spent an estimated 285 hours on our projects. And last, but definitely not least, the two programmers we have working for us have thrown about 150 hours into the project. That gives us about 1, 225 hours, give or take a few. That is about 30 workweeks worth of hours.

Total donations as of 12/21/2023: $52,966

Total donors as of 12/21/2023: 650

Fun fact! If you have a Stanza cup, you own 1 of only 702 cups like it. Thank you for lightening your wallets for our sake. We are deeply grateful. And, bonus points, you get Stanza. On your coffee cup. But also on your phone, too, eventually.

On to the exciting news! We have a working app on which one can search for and view songs. We have a nice and cozy list of generous songwriters and we are still adding songs daily.

What needs to be done yet? We need to build a system for accepting subscription money, a system for generating reports to pay songwriters, and uh… I’m not sure. I think that’s about it. Other than the Android app. That’s coming too.

So yes, I think we’ve done marvelously this year. Here’s hoping we can get the app into your hands by … next Christmas.

Below are a few screenshots of the iOS app and some mockups of the Android app.

What will be the annual subscription cost? Whatever it will be, it will be worth it don’t get me wrong

We mentioned in a previous post that we might ask a subscription cost of $5 a month or $50 per year.
